Welcome to Peerless Mattress & Furniture Company

Peerless was founded in Flint, Michigan by brothers, Percy and Sol Rotenberg in 1924. Sol didn't wish to stay in the business and went back to Canada. Percy assumed the running of the company on a day-to-day basis. At that time, Peerless was primarily a mattress manufacturer/refurbisher and retailer.

A gentleman by the name of Charlie Pemberton came to work for Peerless as a mattress maker in 1926. In 1929, during the height of the Great Depression, Charlie was able to buy half the business. Soon thereafter, he became the treasurer of the company. Charlie understood the necessity of treating customers fairly. He also knew how to stretch a buck. Under his leadership, the company continued to grow and quickly became the largest retailer for mattresses in the Flint area.

In 1953, Charlie's nephew, Jim Pemberton, came to work for the company continuing Peerless' tradition of excellent customer service. Under his leadership, Peerless continued to prosper at its location in downtown Flint. Flint was fast becoming a booming city due to the rapidly expanding automotive manufacturing industry. Furniture became a much larger focus of our company. As a result, Peerless played a major role in furnishing many of the new homes that sprang up in the Flint area as its population rapidly expanded due to this increase of the area's automotive industry.

Peerless has continued to evolve. It now serves the Lansing, Michigan community as well as Flint. The original building in downtown Flint has given way to a state of the art showroom on Miller Road in Flint and another world-class showroom on Saginaw Street in Lansing. Both of these showrooms feature the largest selection of attractively displayed, brand name furniture, mattresses, accessories and floor coverings in mid-Michigan as well as offering a design service to our Peerless customers. With all of this, Peerless continues to delight its customers by providing beautiful home furnishing solutions at the guaranteed lowest price in the area.
